Yoga Inversions and and Living with Arthritis

Keeping my sanity and balance

In 2023 at 54 years old, I was diagnosed with stage 4 osteoarthritis of the knees. It happened suddenly. One day I was running the next day I was unable to.

I used to think arthritis only happened to those who were older (than myself) and people that were unhealthy. I was wrong and it has been humbling.

What's next?

I will be getting my 3rd round of gel injections soon for my bone-on-bone knee arthritis. Unfortunately, my insurance only covers injections once a year even though it is recommended by my doctor to have them twice a year.

A piece of advice

Always check with the pharmaceutical company to see if they offer assistance if your insurance company doesn’t cover the treatments.

You can also have your doctor try to appeal it to your insurance company, I had no luck though.

The price for the 2 knee injections will be $900 out of pocket. It is a little steep but much better than the $2,700 as originally quoted. The gel injections are necessary to function for my job as self-employed pet sitter and dog walker.

Lately, it has been frustrating to have my knees swell after only being on them an hour Some days it feels like tiny sharks are biting my knees. The injections that gave my knees cushion have worn off. Reality is hitting once again.

Here I am about 20 years ago. I was hiking and rock climbing without care. I'd be lying to say I don't miss my younger body and knees.

Until I can get a knee replacement it will be physical therapy exercises, gel injections, Advil, kinesthetic tape and ice to manage my symptoms.

To support my work, consider becoming paid subscriber for as little as $5.00 a month

For now, I am focusing on what I can do, instead of what I can't do.

Take care of your body, it's the only one you got.

Our sunroom's floor is completed, and dry rot has been resolved. I think I'll claim this as a yoga studio or a corner of it anyway 😉

Questions:

Do you have a fitness routine?

Have you ever had to make adjustments to physical activity due to injury or illness?
