My sister and I in front of our childhood home in 1974
You can go home again
I had the privilege 14 years ago to move back into my childhood home. I wish the circumstances were different for the move. My mom passed away in February 2010 suddenly and unexpectedly. My dad had passed away 12 years prior. We were all grieving and dealing with her loss and handling her estate.
Helping my mom do the dishes. Back when housework was play
My son getting me breakfast on Mother's Day 2014. We still have the original cabinets from 1965!! They need to be refinished though!
Making a decision to move
My husband and I made the decision to purchase my childhood home. I had so many fond memories there growing up, I couldn’t let it go. The location was closer to my sister, my husband’s family, my husband’s work and we loved the house. It would be smaller than the current home we were living in, but it had character and a beautiful yard. I could picture us raising our son and building our lives there.
In August of that year my husband, our son, 3 dogs and 2 cats moved into the 4-bedroom, cape cod home that I grew up in.
Winter in the 70s
Christmas 2023
Our first repair was vinyl siding to replace the cedar shake. It was the original from 1965. My mom asked to have the cedar siding because of her love of authentic cape cod homes. After many years, the birds started to love it too. So, we replaced it and kept the color as close to the original as possible.
How many 70s items can you spot?
Christmas 2023
The 70s paneling has been painted over and goodbye green shag carpet. Our bookshelf now houses our cd collection. How many 70s items can you spot?
I spy!!
*If you zoom in you can see a palm tree, we got at Stuckeys on a road trip to Florida. Who remembers Stuckey’s? The fate of that tree in a dark corner of a Pennsylvania living room in December?…… one can only guess. RIP little tree.
The kitchen, the hub of the home. Are my eyes closed from pattern overload or brain freeze?
Less patterns today, and the cats take over sometimes. Top right my husband and I, with my sister and her husband Christmas 2022.
1st day of kindergarten for me in 1974. Notice the farmland across the road?
Our son on his first day of school. 4th grade?
A few questions for fun
What memories do you have of your childhood home?
How far do you live now from where you grew up?
Thank you for taking a trip down memory lane with me. There will be more to come
What a fun trip down memory lane. I remember lots of the 70s items especially that plastic baby thing on the table. My mom had one similar for my sister. I think we are same age I started kindergarten in 1974 too. I'm really glad to be part of one of the last generations to not grow up online or digital.
Oh what great photos and memories you have!
