When I get one of those, I always say this is a place for writers and story tellers. When they start about cash apps or constantly wanting to know what you are doing, I tell them to go to Facebook.

I can't stand it. One day I will have 100 subscribers the next day 120 up to 160 later on. Once I check to see if these individuals are commenting on others that I subscribed to I usually let it be, but when I see that they are not posting nor commenting. I just delete them. It's so time-consuming going through that process, and annoying.

Mine goes, up and down too Kathleen. I try not to look at the #’s anymore. It is so time consuming to go through and delete, I guess unless they aren’t being evil bots ;). I was hoping mine would drop (it would save me work) when they did the sweep, but it didn’t, it only went up!! Maybe they didn’t get to all of them yet. Sometimes I wish mine would stay small at 100 or less

I feel the same way. Sometimes scrolling I thought if this might be a dating app, too? Since muting all the nudes it’s gotten better. I find it hard to trust anyway. People so often have hidden agendas. A few years ago I was so blind and stupid I couldn’t see that on social media. I learnt the hard way. It makes me sad that I must say it’s better not to trust too soon. Great post, Jane! 🫶🏻

Thanks so much. I feel like using AI images myself I can spot them easier. I spot them on tv. Commercials use them so much, ads too. It’s cheaper

Those hidden agendas. Trust no one is my moto. I hate feeling that way

Same here. I always rejected that way of thinking but learnt by experience.

Great post Jane! I’m sorry you’ve gone through all that. I don’t think I’ve had anything stolen but I’ve definitely received unwanted messages. The kind that start out “hello beautiful”. And just like other platforms, they are pretending to be doctors and widowers and yes I’ve also seen many with photos of dogs. I guess they think it makes them appear more genuine. I suppose all we can do at this point is not engage with them, block, report and hope they get the message they’re not welcome here!

Yep! So many of them. For years!! Got to love it! I guess they think they will be able to con that one person eventually

I haven’t seen my photos taken yet.

It’s definitely a new world with all the ai tools getting better with photo and video production.

At my age, I thought I'd be immune to some of the "dating app" vibe that's creeping up here on Subastack. But it appears I'm not, and it's damn annoying. Whether you find Jerry Seinfeld funny or not, I thought his take on AI quite spot on.

Prudence tells me to be, not necessarily suspicious, but cautious about non verified claims. I learned that as a kid with a racist, anti-Semitic grandfather, it was reinforced in high school studying science and of course learning about the scientific method. My service in Vietnam and what what people who were never there told me I did, added to a relatively strong foundation.

Then studying engineering built the structure that to this day shelters me from the buffeting winds of bullshit.

AI. Too much to really answer here.

Incredible tool, with immense potential for good and bad, AI, and its effects for the near term will be determined by who is using it, not by the technology. It will be so pervasive in the next few years that children being born now won’t consider it as technology but as an everyday phenomenon. Technology is like that, to those who are alive and experiencing it in real time it’s technology. To those born after it’s invention and normalization it is just there, like grain threshers, radio, television, computers, etc.

Too early to understand…….

Good post

I've had them too. I'm getting better at recognizing them. I was glad to see that Substack was doing a "sweep" to clear them out. Is there a Substack Authority to report these to, or are we expected to keep dealing with them individually? If I "delete" one, they will just move on to another person. It would be helpful if there was a source to report them to that could stop them from moving on to pester other writers.

Thanks for bringing this topic up, Jane. It is very brazen of them to use your photo and such a violation of your personal and professional boundaries.

You can report to Substack. I don't know if anything changes though. They did do a sweep but I didn't notice my # going down like I hoped so I will check on my own. I guess as long as they aren't spamming me. My teenage son understands this more than I do

Thank you for posting about this, Jane! Oh, yes, they are beyond irritating! Too many seem to think this is a 'dating app' or who knows?! I block when I notice; don't have time for their "creepiness"!

Can't believe that someone used your photo like that! People are awfully nervy anymore. How can we make it harder for them to do this? Is using a watermark effective? Do we report profiles who do take content from posts or notes?

As far as AI...not a fan at all. I guess I am just old and find little about it that impresses me. Particularly in writing or creating photos....what ever happened to wanting to see original creativity and craft? I am sure AI does have its place, just don't think on creative platforms it is an honest reflection of a person's talents. My opinion, anyway. I don't follow or subscribe if things are overly AI created. I prefer the real McCoy.

Anyway, I intend to move through this space with those who are genuine or with established reputation. For me, this still matters.

Blessings,

~Wendy💜

You can report and do that repeatedly. Block. Then what?

So many people are searching for real now too in creative expressions. I am old school that way too. Thanks so much for commenting here and reading. I truly appreciated it

I don't automatically discount people who don't write, but it definitely gets my hackles up. Did you reach out to the person who stole your photo? I had that happen years ago on FB, a dummy account posing as me with many of my photos. I reported it and it was taken down. It leaves you feeling slimed though. I'm sorry this happened to you. I try not to put too much stock in numbers, just see it as overall feedback to if I am on the right track with what I write.

Jane, I haven't noticed this like you have, but I still feel you've raised such deep questions. I understand how this feels so painful to you. I would be upset if my photo had been stolen. I've had stories stolen (a decade ago) and placed on questionable websites. Often, there's not much that can be done in these situations so I've learned to ignore them. But I can see how it could easily stir up distress for me too if they start flooding my feed. Sending love! 💗

Thanks so much, Sandra! It’s our world now that’s all. You can watermark your work I guess, but it could be removed. I’m still boggled why it was used when it’s so easy to use your own or get an image. I’d be flattered if someone would ask to use my photos on a post and give me credit of course.

I don’t love a lot of things about AI but I just had an amazing experience with it this past week. I was on a zoom call and the person I was zooming with had this AI that listened to us. As soon as the zoom was over it emailed us a summary of the meeting. It was pretty spot on. Very cool.

There are some amazing things about AI. I use photos from it and the chat bots. It’s everywhere and it is a tool to use. There is good and bad. That had to be so helpful with the meeting summary. It can make our jobs and lives easier, but will it take away from others eventually? Or could it create? Way too much to think about, Lol

Did you message the person who used your photo?

I do wonder that too, unless they are coming from outside sources, other platforms. I did not message. I posted a comment and was later blocked
