Our Spooky Night Out
The Haunted Hotel
The Brinton Lodge is a 300-year-old landmark in Pennsylvania that is believed to be haunted.
This is one our go-to places for my husband and me. We enjoy the eclectic food atmosphere, and we often meet up with friends here too. It is now microbrewery, so that’s a plus for Mike.
A Haunted History
This building was originally built in 1711 and has a long history of hauntings. According to the Brinton Lodge Website - Which is now Hidden River Brewery, the house is believed to be haunted by 5 spirits.
One is called the “Lady in White” who appears to be friendly. There also has been a spirit identified as a little girl. There is a spirit known as “Dapper Dan” that has tipped his hat to the ladies and whispers in their ears. There is also an older woman believed to be Caleb Brinton’s mother.

These spooky stairs have always made me uneasy
My own experience with the haunted stairs
I remember dining there many years ago when it was simply a restaurant and bar, as girl’s night out. We used to joke about hauntings. There was one area that made me feel uneasy even back then. The stairway.
A few years later we had a work Christmas party there. My co-worker’s dad owned the lodge at the time. After dinner we dared each other to go upstairs. I walked up a few steps and stopped. I tried again later, and I could not move up. There was something up there that made me uneasy. I love exploring places and I had a license to be nosey, yet I could not go up those stairs.
Years after, when we returned and it became what we know today as Hidden River Brewing, I was still intrigued, yet those steps made me feel uneasy.

A ghost? Is it me or is something over our friend's shoulder in the mirror? The person taking the selfie? Maybe.
The haunted stairs true story
I was watching a special on the news the other morning about The Brinton Lodge. I learned that on those very stairs a woman named Katharine tripped over the hem of her dress and fell to her death. It happened at the halfway point of the staircase, right at the point where I felt I could not go any further.
There is also a spirit of a woman, it is rumored, that does not like anyone upstairs. The stairs have since been blocked off.
Other experiences. Our friend saw a shadow of a man when we went out to dinner with them. We still don’t know if he was joking or he really saw something. He swears it was true.
It has also been rumored that there are disembodied footsteps. I recently heard about that as well. I’ve heard them thinking children were running but saw no one.
Then there is our friend’s teen daughter that was there once, and she refuses to go back. She is 21 now and still will not go in. Did she have a paranormal experience as well?

Partway through reading this I said to myself “I’ve been to this place.” Then I stopped reading and looked it up on Google. Yes! I have been there. I visit friends in PA every few years and they took me there one night! I actually drove (in the pouring rain, at night) so I could be designated driver for them. What a hoot! I remember going into some of the rooms. That stairway!
We have a haunted hospital that was closed years ago. I wish I could visit it at the witching hour! I love hauntings. Lovely post, Jane.
