I began writing short stories when I was seven, I'll persuade my elder brother to read them. It was mostly princess stories because I was obsessed with Disney at the time ๐
And now, writing is a way I express myself. It helps me process my emotions and understand the world around me.
Hi Jane, great that you have these artefacts. I loved writing letters when l was a child and always wanted a pen pal. So, l guess l wasnโt a creative writer, which is still the case given my Substack is personal essays. I did enjoy writing short stories, which more so focused on descriptive writing rather than following the narrative arc. And there is a synchronicity in that the current piece l am working on includes those ill informed judgements teachers can make, l had one of those too, and like you, the teacher that instills some self belief. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day ๐
Great story, Jane. Itโs great that you still have so much physical stuff to look back on. It has to be a great feeling to look back and see the positive reinforcement. A learning experience to say the least and it shows youโve always had the ability to tell a story. You still doโฆnot older, but better !
I took my son to a doctor because they thought he might have ADHD. When my then wife asked where it came from the doctor said, "it is usually hereditary." He then looked at me and said, "Do you realize that you are catching just a portion of what I am saying, your feet are moving, and you keep looking out the window?" My son didn't feel like he was the only one. We put him on meds for a couple of years but took him off when his teacher said he wouldn't be a problem.
As far as journals I kept them in my head till I was older about the time computers came out and I could put them on a cassette that only I could see but a house fire took care of those.
There is a genetic component to ADHD for sure. I'm thankful your son was able to get the support he needed
When I was in elementary school in the 70s and early 80s, it was unknown. I was told I was smart, but didn't apply myself. I was called a daydreamer and put out into the hall because of that and talking during class.
I'm so sorry about your journals that you lost in the fire. There are something's that can't be replaced.
I appreciate you reading as always, Paul and commenting on my post
My wife has been editing my current stories "View from the trees". She says she enjoys what I am trying to say and shows me how to fix it. She told me that sometimes my mind writes in one loooong sentence. You would think that at 73 something would ease off. She says she can tell when I am thinking of a story because I will get quiet then she can hear the keyboard.
I think writing in long sentences says you are a writer! It's something that comes naturally to you. I had a teacher point that out to me. Keep writing!
I have my husband do my editing for my writing. He has a way of making sense out of my jumbled words sometimes

Very beautiful post๐โค๏ธ
That's awesome! Have you saved any of your stories from then?
My first few stories were fairy tales too
Writing is so wonderful with helping process emotions, isn't it? It has become therapy for myself
I appreciate you reading my post and commenting. I find it interesting to hear how others started writing and art
Thank you. Yes, I do! I always wrote my short stories behind my books from the previous class in school...
Oh nice ๐
True, It's very therapeutic to me too... you're very welcome, I'm happy to : )

Thanks so much, Ken! I'm thankful my mom saved my writing. My parents always encouraged that.
โRead this story and youโll find outโ โ Jane as marketer.
I was a bit older when I wrote the worldโs shortest short story:

My dad laughed when he saw a story with only a title.
