Our kids range from 22 to 32 in age. Back-to-school shopping hasn't been the same for a long time. It's been shopping for things for an apartment. The kids haven't liked us going clothes shopping with them for years. I'm not sure when I started dressing like a dad, but it happened. :-)
We went into one of the few standing malls to go to the Rock Shop. It's like a record store I grew up with back in the day. My husband has a record collection (and Cds) my son adds to that too. They also have a Lego store other than that no much else there
We're lucky - my son, who is entering Grade 1 in a bit over a week (we still have that old fashioned post-Labour Day start. I don't understand why so many schools in the US start in August now) has all his supplies covered by tuition. We only have to purchase uniform pieces he's outgrown (if we want new, we had to order it online last month. The store is in Montreal and we're in Toronto. Used pieces are available at the school's pop-up shop). But once he hits middle school, he'll have a list. Some of my parent friends DO have to go shopping, but ones with younger kids are doing at least half of that online. I haven't been inside a real mall in AGES. It's a short subway ride away, but SO MUCH of it can be purchased online. There are also a few covered shopping areas that are "technically" malls, but they don't have many of the stores/brands you'd expect at one. Those we go to on a regular basis, but mostly for food. :)
When I was in middle and high school, I would look forward to back to school shopping because I had a weird (and probably unhealthy) obsession with Staples. My school also had a uniform, so I didn't really need clothes, so what else would I be doing for back-to-school shopping? I was kind of envious of the public school kids when I went to the mall in August because they got to wear what we used to call "grubs" (i.e. non-uniform clothes).
That's nice that your son can start after Labor Day! That's how it used to be when I was growing up. Many of the schools here went back last Monday. They had an extra week this year!
Oh the class lists of elementary school! I remember those days!
I still love Staples!! Something about all that paper and office stuff. I have a small business and appreciate it more. Kid in a candy store lol.
I just went school shopping with my granddaughter for the first time. I haven’t been to a mall in more than eight years. We had so much fun sharing her choices and her patiently listening to my stories of having only one pair of shoes each year.
I moved 8 years ago away from my mall to be closer to my grandchildren, then Covid. When my children were growing up, the MALL was the place to go. One time a friend and I were locked in the mall when they closed at night. Someone overlooked us and we lost track of time. I had to find security and be escorted to my car. Oh, those were the great days.
That's great that you went school shopping with your granddaughter. My son goes to the rock shop. Gets cd (they are popular with his generation) earpods and a concert t-shirt and done
Oh no! Locked in a mall! Sounds like an 80s movie!
We used to walk to a mall across a highway and walk back at night!!! What were we thinking. We had no tracking devices back then lol
Beautiful, they are such a gift!! I don’t remember having the back to school shopping time with anyone. Doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, I just don’t remember it. I was always so uncomfortable with any clothing I tried on. I just wanted to be comfortable. I wasn’t into clothing, more of a tomboy.
My kiddo feels the same with clothes. It’s like pulling teeth to get us to go shopping. The nearest mall to us is a little over an hour away and everything else is just about 40 minutes away, so we just go to what’s closest.
That was a Fox family tradition usually the outlet stores. No air-conditioning, hot days. Oh and that afternoon before 1st day of school for the blue light special. Good times
Jane, I never went back-to-school shopping as a mom, but I did it as a kid and young adult. I was a stationery addict, so I loved getting ready to return to school. I will still visit the back-to-school section of Target.
I wouldn't either! Being a mom is a gift I thought I'd never get. 17 years I became a mom later in life at 38 and my husband a dad at 40. We have one child and he has no one to fight with lol.

That was a rare shopping experience that I embraced. Shopping changes when they get older doesn't it?
Nothing wrong with a dad wardrobe. I tell my husband that. I got my mom uniform
Will still have e mall, but we rarely go there anymore. Still seems pretty when we go by!

I love all of the stationary supplies now too! Back then it was clothes and more clothes
My daughter is 35. We always went shopping at the mall and Target for school clothes and supplies.
I don't think we had target or Walmart when I was a kid!! We had 1 mall and a Kmart oh and a radio shack lol
We had Kmart and Venture - the pre Walmart-Target cousins of the. 60s & 70s
Yes, back in the day. I never heard of Venture. What was that?
I’d say a cleaned up version of Kmart. Better quality merchandise too. They were around until 1998 and went belly up.

Never heard of it. I'll have to look it up. Which part of the country are you from?
Midwest - Chicago
Kmart and Radio Shack! Definitely no Target or WalMart back then.
Yes!!!
